Target Market

We spoke with a marketing expert today who encouraged us to think about who our target market really should be. There's a big difference between what's going on in a 13-year-old's daily life contrasted with an 18-year-old's. I see his point, but I still think it's possible to create a web destination that's relevant and meaningful to all the girls in this group. There are core issues - college, career, relationships, what's going on in the world - that affect everyone. I think the difference is delivering content in various ways so different ages can access it. Am I wrong? Is it just too big to think we can target every girl from middle to high school? Are they too different? Should they be separated?

I think you have to think about what the content is going to be. Knowing your ideas for the magazine, I know you don't want to focus on sex, dating, relationships, as much as the core meaning behind being a young woman. If I'm right, you should be able to target 13-18 yearolds. I think you have to throw some diverse stuff in there that will grip the 18 year olds, since they are going to have most of the knowledge you are emparting on the younger girls, but I don't think its impossible. When I think about Teen She Spot, I think about a place to read about people like me, inspiring women, and get answers to questions about growing up and developing as a woman that I am too embarassed to ask people I know. I think 18 year olds have just as many questions in life as 13 year olds.

What if you seperated it? Your website could be like Tween She Spot and Teen She Spot once you're on the page. That way people could view content that related to them, but if they were curious about the things they were going to be dealing with in the future, the younger girls could view the older girl's stuff, or vice versa. If I had a little sister/cousin and needed to help her with some tough issues, I could gain advice from the tween section. Just kind of spitting out my ideas!

Good luck

I love Allie's idea of a Teen and a Tween spot. Perhaps 13 - 15 and 16 - 18?
